Rollobrary Book Club Receives June’s Grant from Awesome GR!
Wanda Wansley is an awesome person.
Wanda is a high school English teacher at Grand Rapids Central High School that has a passion for teaching and helping others. She has started operating a summer reading camp for local children, ages 2-12, at Davis Memorial Church of God in Christ. The “Rollobrary Book Club” will provide a community library, reading circles, volunteers reading to young children and tutorial for challenged readers. ”Children need to be encouraged to improve and expand their reading and writing skills during the summer months,” Wansley said.
To promote summer reading, Wanda decided to blend technology and reading together. A cyber reading club was quickly formed to encourage club members to read books and short stories on Ebook’s (such as LeapFrog and Amazon’s Kindle). Using this type of technology is an attractive and user-friendly way to promote reading with younger children.
Wanda will use her freshly award $1,000 to purchase Ebooks and other reading materials for the summer program. Wanda’s ultimate goal is to form a local library to encourage “reading around the community” and is working towards that goal by currently hosting a Scholastic Book Fair to help raise funds. They are also accepting gently used and loved books for the reading club… Stop by Davis Memorial Church of God in Christ (111 Griggs Street SE, Grand Rapids) to volunteer or donate books!
