“Hand in Hand with Art” Receives April’s Grant from Awesome GR!

Kris DeYoung is a teacher for the Catholic Secondary Schools in Grand Rapids and as the service learning coordinator (HOPE Coordinator) at the school, Kris is always looking for meaningful and substantive opportunities for her students to give back to the community through projects and experiences.  Kris collaborates each year with Artists Creating Together (formerly known as Very Special Arts) to design a large-scale activity area for ACT’s annual Festival Day (being held this year on Friday, May 4).  ACT is a non-profit agency that provides arts experiences to people with disabilities.

ACT is celebrating the 26th Annual Festival Day “Hand in Hand with Art” on Friday, May 4 at the Lincoln School in Grand Rapids (860 Crahen NE).  This is our community’s largest annual event that brings together children, youth and volunteers with and without disabilities to experience the arts.  Each year the event is celebrated by more than 2,300 people!  This exciting event is the finale of a year of classroom programming and workshops between professional artists and Kent County’s students with disabilities.

The $1,000 grant will help Kris and her students pay for supplies and creative materials that can be used to allow children to touch and create their own art using fabrics, beans, textured papers & metals.
